Save the Date for HeadStart Ottawa: Legal Research for Articling Students!

If you will be taking on any articling students this summer, mark August 16th, 2013 in your calendar! The CCLA Library is presenting a half-day session on legal research, designed exclusively for new articling students. We first held HeadStart Ottawa last year, based on long-running program of the same name in Edmonton. Our program covers the research tools students have available (either through our Library or online) that will be vital to the research they will take on during their articling year.

The cost of the session will be $25.00, and will also include your student’s CCLA Membership for the articling term (which gives members 24/7 access to our library, among other great perks). Seating will be limited, so don’t delay in registering your student with us! If you’d like us to add your student to the RSVP list, please send us an email.

Also back this year will be our free Articling Student Luncheon. This luncheon will take place after HeadStart, and will be held in the CCLA Library. If your student won’t be able to make the session, they are still invited to lunch – we’d love to meet them!

Much more information will be coming, so watch for details over the next few months!

CCLA Info for Articling Students

Ottawa’s summer is in full swing, and we hope that you’ve had time to enjoy the weather and get away to some shade or the cottage for a break from the heat! Here at the CCLA Library, we are busy planning for the fall, and in particular for the new articling students that will be arriving at firms and the library in the coming weeks.

The CCLA and its library have a lot to offer students, from social and educational events to reference and support services. If new students are joining your firm, we encourage you to pass this newsletter onto them so that they can stay informed, and if you are a new student we’d love for you to stop by the library for a tour and learn about library resources, services, and training opportunities that may assist you during your articles.

I’ve consolidated a short list of things that articling students may want to check out at the CCLA this year below. As always, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us if you have any questions!

1. The CCLA e-Newsletter

Perhaps the most valuable tool for new members of our legal community is the CCLA’s e-Newsletter, which is sent out once per week and shares news and notices, educational and social events, and job opportunities relevant to the East Region legal community. Students can sign up for the newsletter by clicking here, or they can follow us on Twitter or Facebook, where it is also posted each week.

2. Social Events and Pub Nights

The CCLA holds a number of social events and pub nights throughout the year that offer a chance for articling students, new lawyers, and not-so-new lawyers to meet one another. There is no registration necessary, and we provide the snacks. Our first pub night of the year is scheduled for Thursday, September 22nd from 5:30 to 8:00 PM at MacLaren’s Pub. These events are always advertised on our Calendar of Events and via our e-Newsletter.

3. Learning and Professional Development Opportunities

The CCLA also offers a number of educational opportunities geared specifically toward articling students, which can be a great help during articles and provide opportunities to network with other legal professionals.  Check out our joint program with the OBA on August 19th: Excelling at Articles: Surviving and Thriving in Your First Year, or our workshop on Small Claims in September. Mentoring events and dinners are also held throughout the year, providing opportunities to ask established mentors your toughest questions. The CCLA Library also offers a number of free Quicklaw and Westlaw training sessions throughout the year, for when you want to brush up on your skills and learn how to research faster and more effectively.

All of the CCLA’s other annual conferences and seminars, including our four Cornerstone Conferences, Criminal Law, Civil Litigation, Family Law, and Solicitors, also offer excellent opportunities for students to learn about law practice and meet established legal professionals. Many of these conferences are must-attend networking and learning events in the East Region, and students are strongly encouraged to attend.

All of our events and registration information can be found on the Calendar of Events on our website.

4. Library Resources, Services, and Tours

The CCLA Library can be an enormous help to students during their articles, especially when they need reference or research assistance. Call us if you need help finding cases, researching legislation, or finding the materials you need to answer a tough research question. We can also walk you through online sources and legal databases and help you use them to your full advantage. The library also offers an extensive print collection, computer, printing, photocopying, and wireless access in the Courthouse, free access to legal databases, and quiet study space. This is not to mention the friendly staff, who are always happy to help out in any way they can.

We hope you’ll come in for a tour of the library, as they’re a great opportunity to meet the library staff and learn about the resources and services that we have to offer. Drop us a line if you’d like to schedule a tour; you can check out the pre-scheduled tour times here, or contact your Reference Librarian, Kaitlyn Tribe (that’s me), at ktribe@ccla-abcc.ca to schedule one at an alternate time. We look forward to meeting you!

These are just a few of the opportunities the CCLA is offering articling students this year. Information about other educational and community events, CCLA membership opportunities for students, and other tools and services can all be found on our website. Please don’t hesitate to contact me or any of the other CCLA staff if you have any questions.

Sharpen Your Skills at the CCLA Library

The CCLA Library is pleased to offer free training sessions next month on two of the most popular and widely consulted legal research databases used in the practice of law today: LexisNexis Quicklaw and Westlaw Canada. Access to these powerful research databases is available for free on all the desktops in the CCLA Library, and CCLA Members, articling students, and members of the Bar and their staff are encouraged to take advantage of this access by visiting the CCLA Library.

Specialists will be joining us to offer guidance and training on how to more effectively search for useful case law, legislation, and commentary. Learn how to find results more quickly, and narrow them to find more specific and powerful precedents to support your arguments. Take your search beyond basic search terms by learning to effectively use case digests, note-up features, and Boolean operators. These sessions are an excellent opportunity for students and experienced legal professionals alike to refresh, sharpen, or broaden their online research skills. We encourage legal professionals of all skill levels to sit in on a session and learn some new techniques.

The sessions will be held in the CCLA Library, located in Room 2004 on the main floor of the Ottawa Courthouse, at 161 Elgin Street. Please feel free to bring your lunch; iced tea and snacks will be served.

Session dates and times are as follows:

Westlaw Canada – Wednesday, March 9th, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM.
LexisNexis Quicklaw – Wednesday, March 30th, from 1:00 – 2:00 PM.

Please send a quick email to the CCLA’s Reference Librarian, Kaitlyn Tribe (ktribe@ccla-abcc.ca) if you are interested in attending either of the sessions. We hope to see you there!

The CCLA Library is always interested in providing better training and services to members of the legal community. If you have any comments, questions, or ideas for training session topics, dates and times, or services, please don’t hesitate to contact us. We’re always happy to receive ideas and feedback!

Reminder – Free Westlaw Training

By Katie Tribe

A quick reminder from the CCLA Library that we are hosting the first of a series of free training sessions on our most popular legal research databases this Thursday over the lunch hour. This week, Josée Provost, a Senior Learning Consultant with Carswell, will be joining us to feature Westlaw Canada. I can tell you from personal experience that Josée is an excellent researcher and trainer; as a librarian, I find her training sessions invaluable, and always learn something new each time I attend.

The session is free, so feel free to send or bring along your staff, assistants, or articling students. The training session takes place from 12:00-1:00 PM right in the CCLA Library, located in the Ottawa Courthouse. Send me a quick email if you’d like to attend, or drop by if you’re in the building. Hope to see you there!

Just a note that the Supreme Court of Canada Library recently notified us that tours of the Court and library are being offered to articling students next month. I’ve taken the tour and can vouch that both the Court and library are fascinating and beautiful; since tours of the Supreme Court aren’t available very often, I definitely recommend attending or sharing this opportunity with the students at your firm.

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 at 10:30 AM – Court Tour
Wednesday, September 15th, 2010 at 11:00 AM – Library Tour

When attending the tour, simply meet the guides in the Grand Entrance Hall just inside the main front entrance of the building. Each session lasts approximately 30 to 40 minutes.

If you or someone you know is interested in attending, contact the Supreme Court Library’s Reference Desk by email at library@scc-csc.gc.ca prior to September 7th indicating your time and language preference. The Reference Desk will contact you for confirmation after receiving your email.

I highly recommend scheduling some time to check out this beautiful building and library! Of course, the CCLA Library is also offering tours this fall, so be sure to get in touch with us if you’d like to stop by!

CCLA Library Tours for Students

By Jennifer Walker

Every summer, we like to invite all the new Summer and Articling students in Ottawa to the CCLA library for a tour. We try to let all the firms and sole practitioners know, so they can set that up, but if you’re a student and are reading this, please feel free to book yourself for a tour! Our tours last about 15 to 20 minutes, and of course, are right here in the library at Courthouse at 161 Elgin Street.

This year, we have some really exciting news for students that we’re pleased to share: we now have a “Student” membership category! Previously, students were not eligible to be members, and so could not take advantage of any of the member perks. This new category will let students have all the benefits other members do, including the after-hours access to the CCLA Library, but for a pretty great reduced price. Without membership, access to the library will be limited to our normal business hours – Monday to Friday, 8:30 am to 5:00 pm.

Training Opportunities at the CCLA Library

By Katie Tribe

The CCLA Library is proud and happy to provide a number of extremely useful electronic resources for free to the legal community. We provide free online access to Quicklaw, Criminal Spectrum, DivorceMate, and O’Brien’s Forms and Precedents, to name a few, and are currently working to provide you with a few new electronic goodies in the near future. When we say free, we mean free in every sense of the word; there are no passwords, time clocks, billable hours, or download limits when using these products in the library. We only offer free, unlimited access.

As librarians, we don’t just want to make the products available to you; we also want to teach you how to use them, and to use them effectively. We also know that many firms have these products available in-house, and sometimes just need a refresher that covers searching techniques and new features. To help you out, we are available to instruct you and troubleshoot for you, whether by scheduled appointment or whenever you happen to call or stop by the CCLA Library. We also regularly offer training sessions in the library.

Training sessions are advertised via the CCLA website and listserv, and generally happen in the library over the lunch hour. We try to schedule the sessions in a way that is convenient to the legal community. For example, we offer a fresh set of sessions every fall to coincide with all the fresh articling students entering the scene. The sessions are informal, and you are welcome to bring a coffee or your lunch (yes, that means eating in the library!) and stay for as much or as little as you wish. We are also available afterward to answer questions.

So far, these sessions have provided insight into programs such as Quicklaw and Criminal Spectrum, and we have plans in the works for a number of other specialized sessions in the future. We are currently offering a series on Quicklaw, and there is still room in the remaining sessions if you’d like to register! Registration simply involves sending a quick email to me, Katie Tribe, at ktribe@ccla-abcc.ca. Of course, if you happen to be in the courthouse that day and haven’t registered, we still encourage you to stop by. We always seem to find room for everyone! The remaining sessions (one of which is this Thursday) are as follows:

Thursday, March 4th, 2010 – Legislation
Learn how to use Quicklaw to effectively find statutes, regulations, and related case law.

Thursday, March 25th, 2010 – Secondary Sources
Learn about the commentary, journal articles, forms, and news pieces available on Quicklaw, and how to effectively locate them.

Thursday, May 27th, 2010 – Introduction to Quicklaw
An opportunity for incoming students and experienced lawyers alike to be introduced to or revisit the basics of Quicklaw.

Hope to see you there!
