New Book Alert: Sopinka on the Trial of an Action, 3rd Edition

Long considered a classic on trial advocacy, the third edition of Sopinka on the Trial of an Action has recently been published by LexisNexis. The second edition, published in 1998 (shortly after the sudden passing of The Honourable Mr. Justice John Sopinka in 1997), has been well-loved at this library. We’ve gone through several copies in the last 18 years, and we’re sure this new edition will inspire and educate a new generation of barristers.

For this edition,  J. Kenneth McEwan, Q.C., has updated the previous version, while keeping so much of what made it a great book, and also included a new introductory chapter. For more a bit more on what to expect from this edition, check out the LexisNexis website.

The book is so new that we haven’t even let it out of our cataloguing area yet. If you would like to see it, however, just ask!

From Your Library: New Release – “Researching Quebec Law: Insights for Common Law Practitioners”

When we saw this new book available through Carswell, we immediately put in an order for a copy for the library. We don’t tend to get a lot of questions having to do with Quebec, so if you’re like us and a bit lost when it comes to the law of la belle province, this book might give you some much needed clarity. Written for non-French speaking, common law legal professionals, the book provides a history of the Quebec legal system, information on how to research Quebec legislation, case law, and commentary sources, and a very thorough glossary of terms.

This book is so new to the library that we don’t even have it on the shelves yet. If you would like to review it right away, please ask at the front desk. In the coming weeks, you’ll be able to find this book in our Reference section at KF 240 M37 2015.

From Your Library: New Release – “Election Law in Canada”

Every so often,we get a new book in the library that is on a topic where we have few other titles, especially anything published recently. Aside from some entries in legal encyclopedias and an older text, election law is one of those topics. This is why we’re excited about a new book: Election Law in Canada by Donald J. Bourgeois with Susan B. Campbell. You can find this book in our library in the Texts section at KF 4483 .E4 B67 2015.

If you’d like to pick one up for yourself, you can buy it from Lexis where it costs $90.00.

From Your Library: New Release – “Examinations in Civil Trials”

If you’re an articling student or new lawyer, this is for you! Irwin Law (the publisher of “those burgundy text books”) has a series of books aimed specifically at those who are new to the profession. The latest in this series – which is authored by Ottawa lawyer John Hollander – was published just last month and is called Examinations in Civil Trials: The Formula for Success. You can find this, along with the other books in this series, in our library (this book specifically is at KF 8950 H64 2015).

New Titles: July & August 2012

Here’s a list of new titles we’ve brought into the library over the summer.  We tend to order a few less books during this time, but we did stock up on some new Irwin Law titles.  These easy-to-read texts are popular here in the library, and we’re excited to have some newer releases, such as Civil Litigation and Courts, Litigants, and the Digital Age.
